Cheddar cheese is one of the most popular cheeses sold in the UK and the Black Bomber is one of my all-time favourites.  It’s a mature cheddar and it sure does pack a punch.

The Black Bomber is produced in North Wales by the Snowdonia Cheese Company.  They produce an exciting range of delicious cheeses that come in various sizes of truckles.  Out of them all, this is their flagship cheese.  If you’ve never heard of the Black Bomber, then it’s time to get acquainted.

The Black Bomber is a hard cheese made from cow’s milk.  The cheese itself has a typical off-white colour and it’s presented in a black wax.  Like most cheddars, you really can’t go wrong with the Black Bomber.  It’s so down to earth and works on practically any meal from a classic burger to a cottage pie.

The great thing about truckle cheeses is that they usually have a longer shelf life.  Even if you open the cheese it will probably still last a month or two as long as you keep it refrigerated and wrapped up properly.  Ideally, it should be wrapped in wax paper but you could even wrap it in tin foil as long as you keep it loose, so it doesn’t suffocate and start to sweat.

Before you eat the cheese take it out of the fridge and leave it for a couple of hours to bring it down to room temperature.  Trust me, it will be worth the wait.

If you like a strong-tasting cheese with a knock out smell, then this is the one for you.  Most farmer markets and your local delicatessen will probably have it in stock.  If you have trouble finding it don’t worry because it’s available to buy online.

Tasting Notes

This award-winning cheese is a modern classic marrying a sharp cheddar taste with a smooth creaminess.

How to Enjoy

The Black Bomber goes amazing on crusty bread with a caramelised red onion chutney and washed down with a glass of red wine.  Snowdonia recommends a Cabernet Sauvignon but to be honest any red works for me.
